How A Heat Pump System Works
The Geothermal Heat Pump System works by exchanging heat with the earth through a ground heat
exchanger using an open or closed loop system. Depending on the available land area at the installation site there are
different ways to bury the pipe. Horizontal installation is less expensive but takes up more land area. Vertical
installations are usually more expensive but are great where there is little land. Plastic pipes are buried underground
and are filled with a water or antifreeze solution. In winter, fluid within the pipes extracts heat from the earth and
carries it into the building. In the summer, the system reverses itself by pulling heat from the building and depositing
into the cool earth. With a fan located in the residence, the warm or cool air is circulated throughout the building.
Over 70% of the energy comes from the earth because the system only uses electric power to move heat. The heat from
the residence is returned to the earth with the same high efficiency during summer. The process creates free hot
water in the summer and at a substantial savings in the winter.
